Mark Howitt wrote a paper for the Journal of Energy and Power Engineering (JEPE) entitled ‘Gigawatt Scale Storage for Gigawatt Scale Renewables’.
In the piece he emphasised the importance of balancing services to account for the intermittency of sustainable technologies.
He acknowledged that whilst Demand Side Response and batteries have a place in future energy scenarios, without LDES their purposes cannot be fulfilled and why the UK cannot rely on interconnectors to supply power from our European neighbours when national generation is low.
The paper presents CAES and pumped hydro as sensible solutions to the problem of grid intermittency as they are well proven long-duration energy storage technologies that will ensure security of energy supply during and after the energy transition.
