Storelectric recently attended the annual DEEP.KBB Seminar in Bad Zwischenahn, Germany. Industry experts got together to discuss the latest developments in salt cavern storage. Representing Storelectric was our Managing Director, Tallat Azad, and Head of Technology, Simon Maycock. Discussions ranged from geology and well design to solution mining, and energy innovations.
A major theme of this year’s seminar was the growing potential of underground caverns for large-scale hydrogen storage. As hydrogen production accelerates across Europe, safe, efficient, and scalable storage solutions are becoming a top priority. With salt caverns offering proven reliability and flexibility, they are set to play a critical role in integrating hydrogen into the energy system.
A Glimpse into Europe’s Largest Cavern Operations
One of the highlights of our trip was a tour of Nord-West Kavernengesellschaft mbH (NWKG) in Wilhelmshaven. NWKG are one of Europe’s leading cavern operators. NWKG currently stores crude oil and mineral oil products in its caverns but is actively working to transition its storage infrastructure to support hydrogen. This repurposing existing of assets for the energy transition closely aligns with Storelectric’s mission.
During the seminar, discussions centred on the importance of utilising existing cavern infrastructure to support the rapid scaling of hydrogen storage. With Europe’s hydrogen economy expanding, leveraging proven storage methods will be key to ensuring stability, security, and cost-effectiveness in the clean energy transition.
Industry Collaboration
Beyond the technical discussions, the DEEP.KBB Seminar provided an invaluable opportunity to connect with experts from across Europe. The event fostered lively debates on best practices in solution mining, operational efficiencies, and the evolving role of salt caverns in the energy landscape.
We are grateful to Deep.KBB for hosting such a forward-thinking event. Storelectric remains committed to driving innovation in energy storage, and events like this help ensure that we stay at the forefront of industry advancements. We look forward to further collaborations and continuing our work in developing large-scale, long-duration energy storage solutions.
