March News: Re-Brand and Renewable Energy Association Report

Storelectric Re-Brand

To clarify the extent to which our technologies support the energy transition, Storelectric has re-branded them with names that mean more:

Technology Formerly Comments
Green CAES TM TES CAES Zero-carbon adiabatic CAES from day 1, the world’s most efficient CAES
Hydrogen CAES TM CCGT CAES The plant is hydrogen compatible from day 1, though its dual fuel capability enables it to operate wholly or partly on methane until sufficient hydrogen becomes available
Hydrogen Hybrid CAES TM CCGT Hybrid Combines the features of Green CAES and Hydrogen CAES in a highly flexible plant

All Storelectric’s CAES technologies are the world’s most cost-effective widely implementable large-scale long-duration storage. All are naturally inertial and therefore provides grid stability as well as balancing, ancillary and other services. With such storage, the energy transition can be cost-effective, reliable and resilient in all large grids world-wide; we believe that without it, it can’t. And connecting renewable generation to the grid through our storage provides enormous benefits for the renewables and will save billions for grids.

Recently, public debate has been calling our durations of storage (4 hours to 2+ weeks) “medium” or “longer” duration, reserving the word “long” for seasonal storage. Batteries (½-4 hours) are termed “short”, and shorter duration storage (e.g. flywheels, super-capacitors) are termed “ultra-short” or similar.

Renewable Energy Association Report on Longer-Duration Energy Storage

The Renewable Energy Association has (with our input) published a report on longer-duration energy storage, which has been well received and extensively discussed by BEIS and others. It describes longer-duration energy storage as “The missing piece to a Net Zero, reliable and low-cost energy future”, and proceeds to outline what it does, how it benefits the system, barriers to entry and how government can enable investment in it. Storelectric’s CAES is featured in a case study on p. 13.
